Empowering Children Through Play Therapy

“Children learn as they play. Most importantly, in play children learn how to learn.” -O. Fred Donaldson

Understanding Play Therapy

Play therapy is a therapeutic approach primarily used to help children explore their emotions and express themselves through play. It is grounded in the principles of child-centered therapy, emphasizing the importance of a safe and supportive environment where children can freely express their feelings.  While in session, it is an opportunity for them to express how they are feeling without having to share it directly; this can be done by the therapist observing their play, having them work with art or through the sand tray.

During my first couple of sessions, I allow the children to direct the session which helps them feel empowered and create the safe place for them. It allows me to gain trust and to build rapport with them.  This also gives them the opportunity to co-regulate with me.  Once rapport is build, I try to focus each session on their goals created by themselves or what the parents are hoping for. Often the goals are emotional regulation, creating healthy coping skills and being able to express their emotions in a healthy way; all while learning skills that promote their daily life.
